Curation Statement
Ferrell Crawley and Max Saada are pleased to present Frequencies, works that include abstractions of architectural and human forms in dynamic compositions. The artists come from different backgrounds but crossed paths in New York. Crawley and Saada both present distinctly different approaches, yet find common ground in the scale of their gestures and thematic questioning of time. Saada’s carefully crafted paintings are drawn from historical compositions using bold abstractions. Crawley’s subversions of the body play on the senses and associations of transformation affected by time limitations. Saada’s process is calculated and planning-intensive versus Crawley, who works more intuitively and gesturally.
Crawley uses gestalt imagery related to the body to consider interior, physical sensations. The sensations she describes can be related to the complex presence of time on the body. Time takes its toll on our bodies. Crawley aims to expand upon this truth and display how the body reacts through intensity of color and stretching of limbs. In contrast to Crawley, Saada is stripping away from figuration and symbolism to reveal the essence of structure in painting. Saada maintains the importance of traditions and order while bringing forth progressive aesthetics. He aims to describe time through movement, in paths that lead the eye across the canvas. The concept of time as both a limiting and driving factor bonds the works of Crawley and Saada together in an engaging collaboration.
